Pregnancy is a magical time in a pregnant mother’s life, full of excitement, change, and anticipation. But, it can also be quite stressful. Because of this, a maternity photoshoot may not seem too important to you. If you’re on the fence about booking a maternity shoot, you don’t have to worry. You just need to find the right photographer to make your shoot stress-free and beautiful – so you can commemorate this unique point in your life with memories that will last a lifetime.
As a seasoned photographer, that is what I strive for. I go above and beyond in my work to ensure that my clients get beautiful photos – even if that means traveling to the hospital to get a maternity shoot done. Yes, that’s right. I did a maternity shoot for a client at the hospital just hours before she went into labor.
After contacting me at 36 weeks gestation, we set a date and time for a standard maternity photoshoot. This soon-to-be mom was so excited about her maternity pictures. Soon after, my client went to the doctor for a routine checkup, and they told her she needed to be induced right away. I got the call, grabbed my things, and went to the hospital. I provided her with a safe, calm, and loving environment at the hospital for her maternity shoot. Though my client was nervous at first, she loved the images once I delivered the gallery. They turned out beautiful – and now she’ll always have them to look back on.

Your baby’s birthday is something that will stick with them for their entire lives. Creating a shoot styled around the season they’ll be born in is a fun way to add color and style your maternity portraits. Add in some red and orange leaves for fall, lots of flowers for spring, or some snow in the winter. You can also take this opportunity to style your shoot around the holidays nearby.
You don’t want to forget about your other half in your maternity session. Including your partner will create a really loving and fun atmosphere for your maternity shoot. This doesn’t always have to be a significant other either! You can include your other children, friends, or family. Having a fun atmosphere in your images will make them all the better.
After spending all of that time preparing for your newborn, you probably have a prop or two that you’ll be able to include in the shoot. Bring it to the shoot, whether it be a pair of shoes, a baby book, or a cute outfit! This will help add a fun and personalized element to your pictures.
Whether this is a unique mural in your neighborhood, a beautiful nature scene, or inside your house, the backdrop will make or break your maternity portraits. Picking a setting important to you will make capturing beautiful images even better. It will help decide the theme, the atmosphere, and the overall look of the photos, so make sure you pick somewhere you love.
After having a baby, your life can get pretty crazy. It’s hard to find time for anything but parenting. So, showing off a hobby or interest in your maternity shoot can help capture the part of your life that isn’t parenting. Whether it’s reading, playing board games, or painting, your hobbies and interests are important. Don’t be afraid to show them off in your maternity shoot to really make it your own.
Life is unpredictable. Pregnancy is unpredictable. Babies are unpredictable. Sometimes, in both motherhood and photography, you have to roll with the punches. Suppose that means taking maternity pictures in the rain, moving locations at the last minute, or having a photo shoot in the hospital. In that case, you need a photographer to take beautiful images for you – even in less-than-ideal circumstances.
A maternity photo shoot is a beautiful way to welcome a newborn baby into the world. With the right photographer, your photos will turn out stunning, no matter the circumstances.
