You put a lot into your newborn photos, baby portraits, maternity portraits, or other types of family photos. You did this for a reason: because these precious images are a link to the past that can forever transport you back to your happiest memories of this stage in your family’s life. Of course, this link only lasts forever if you don’t lose the digital files in the cyber abyss.

How to Save Your Family Photography Digital Downloads

The exact steps involved in saving your digital downloads will depend on your family photographer and the technology they use to send them. They might send you a link to a gallery where your images are stored on their site. In these cases, there will usually be a “download” button next to each photo. Other photographers provide digital files on physical storage, like a disc or a flash drive/thumb drive. In this case, all you need to do is connect that storage device to your computer and copy the files to whatever folder you choose on your computer.

Tips for Preserving Your Family’s Photos

• Always have a backup (or multiple backups). As fantastic as technology is, it does sometimes fail, or you could lose your access to a particular account, lose your laptop, and so on. Have multiple backup methods like a cloud storage account and an external hard drive.
• Download your images promptly. If your photographer sent you a link to your digital gallery, don’t assume that link will stay live forever. They might have limited storage available to keep galleries up, or they may be limited by their website’s capabilities. Download your images from that gallery as soon as possible so you don’t need to rely on that link.
• When you save your photos, save the photo release if it’s included in your files. This allows you to get your photos printed, created as wall art, or used for other photo products in the future because many print shops won’t complete your order without it.
